What Is Shockwave Therapy?
Shockwave therapy, more formally known as extracorporeal shockwave therapy (EWST), is a nonsurgical, noninvasive procedure that harnesses the body’s natural ability to heal itself by sending mechanical shockwaves deep into damaged tissue. The resulting microtrauma causes inflammation, which in turn triggers increased blood flow to the area, ultimately creating new, healthier tissue.
The shockwaves also stimulate osteoblasts, or the cells responsible for the healing and production of bone, and fibroblasts, or the cells responsible for the healing of connective tissue such as tendons and ligaments.
Shockwave therapy in the form of lithotripsy has been used successfully by urologists for decades to break up kidney stones. In fact, more than 98% of kidney stones are treated using lithotripsy today. In the same way, shockwave therapy for chronic orthopedic conditions breaks up calcium deposits, scar tissue and other hardened deposits to promote healing.
Shockwave Therapy Benefits
For patients seeking a nonsurgical treatment option for a chronic orthopedic condition, shockwave therapy can be life-changing. It can promote healing, reduce pain, restore mobility and improve overall quality of life.
Shockwave therapy may be used to treat a variety of chronic orthopedic conditions, including:
- Lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow)
- Osteoarthritis
- Plantar fasciitis (heel spur syndrome)
- Medial epicondylitis (golfer’s elbow)
- Patellar tendinitis (jumper’s knee)
- Shoulder tendinitis (rotator cuff tendinitis)
- Achilles tendinopathy
- Retrocalcaneal bursitis (ankle bursitis)
- Morton’s neuroma
- Nonunion stress fractures
Shockwave therapy has also been used to reduce the appearance of cellulite, scars and stretch marks.
The Shockwave Procedure
Shockwave therapy is quick and effective. Our specialists use a handheld device to deliver audible, low-energy sound waves directly to the area being treated. The treatment generally takes less than 10 minutes, and no downtime is required.
Most patients experience minimal pain or discomfort, and the frequency and energy level can be adjusted as needed. There are virtually no risks or side effects.
Three treatments spaced one or two weeks apart are recommended for most patients. One or two additional treatments may be needed. While some patients report immediate relief after the initial treatment, it may take up to four months to experience maximum benefits.
For optimal results, shockwave therapy is best used in conjunction with strengthening, stretching and other prescribed exercises.
