Low Dose Naltrexone

functional medicine diagnostic testing

Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN) has emerged as a powerful tool in functional and integrative medicine. Originally developed in higher doses to treat opioid dependence, when used at much lower doses, LDN works very differently in the body. In functional medicine, it is being recognized for its ability to modulate the immune system, reduce inflammation, and restore balance at the cellular level.

  • At low doses, naltrexone briefly blocks opioid receptors in the body. This “temporary block” stimulates the body to increase its own production of endorphins—natural chemicals that regulate immunity, reduce pain, and improve mood. LDN also helps regulate immune system activity, making it valuable for conditions where the immune system is either overactive or underperforming.

  • Functional medicine providers often use LDN as part of a broader, root-cause approach to chronic conditions, including:
    ● Autoimmune Conditions – Supports immune regulation in Hashimoto’s, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, and more.● Chronic Pain & Inflammation – Helpful for fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, Crohn’s disease, and ulcerative colitis.● Neurological Health – Emerging research suggests benefits for Parkinson’s disease, MS, and other neuroinflammatory disorders.● Cancer Support – May help enhance immune surveillance against abnormal cell growth.● Mood & Energy – Endorphin-boosting effects may improve mood, sleep, and vitality.

  • Unlike conventional approaches that often focus solely on symptom management, functional medicine uses LDN to:
    ● Address root causes of immune imbalance and inflammation.● Support the body’s natural healing processes.● Offer a low-cost, low-side-effect option compared to many medications● Integrate with nutrition, lifestyle changes, and advanced testing for a whole-body approach.

Frequently Asked Questions About LDN

  •  Many patients report improved energy, mood stability, reduced pain, and better sleep. Effects can be subtle at first, with benefits building over weeks to months.

  •  Some people notice changes within 2–4 weeks, while others may need 2–3 months to feel the full benefits. LDN works by gradually restoring balance in the immune and nervous systems.

  • Yes, studies and clinical experience suggest LDN is safe and well-tolerated even with long-term use. Side effects are uncommon and usually mild, such as vivid dreams or sleep disturbances in the beginning.

  •  LDN is generally safe with most medications, but it cannot be used with opioid pain medications, as it may block their effects. Always consult with your provider before starting LDN.

  •  LDN is considered an “off-label” use of naltrexone. While naltrexone is FDA-approved in higher doses for addiction, LDN is compounded in smaller doses by specialty pharmacies for immune, pain, and inflammatory conditions.

  •  LDN is usually prescribed as a compounded capsule or liquid, taken once daily, often at bedtime. Your provider will determine the best dose and form for your needs.

At Health by Design MD, we use LDN as one of many tools in our functional medicine toolbox. By combining advanced testing, nutrition, lifestyle guidance, and therapies like LDN, we help patients move toward optimal health and long-term healing.
