Shockwave therapy is an innovative method for reducing pain and enhancing healing in patients with chronic orthopedic conditions.

St. Louis Chronic Orthopedic Pain Specialist, Bryan Warner.

Orthopedic conditions often require lengthy healing times. Shockwave therapy is a groundbreaking treatment that activates the body's immune response, accelerating the healing process.

Significant Pain Relief with Shockwave Therapy

Research indicates that shockwave therapy is extremely safe and highly effective, with about 85% of patients experiencing significant or complete pain relief within three months of treatment.

Bryan Warner, M.D. and the team will collaborate with you to develop a personalized plan to alleviate pain and help you resume a healthy, normal life.

  • What Is Shockwave Therapy?

Formally known as extracorporeal shockwave therapy (EWST), shockwave therapy is a nonsurgical, noninvasive procedure that utilizes mechanical shockwaves to penetrate deep into damaged tissues. This microtrauma induces inflammation, increasing blood flow to the area and promoting the development of new, healthier tissue.

Shockwaves also stimulate osteoblasts, the cells responsible for bone healing and production, and fibroblasts, which facilitate the healing of connective tissues such as tendons and ligaments.

Shockwave therapy, akin to lithotripsy used by urologists for kidney stones, breaks up calcium deposits, scar tissue, and other hardened deposits to encourage healing of chronic orthopedic conditions.

  • Shockwave Therapy Benefits

As a nonsurgical option for chronic orthopedic conditions, shockwave therapy can be transformative, promoting healing, reducing pain, restoring mobility, and enhancing overall quality of life.

Shockwave therapy can treat various chronic orthopedic conditions, including:
Lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow) Osteoarthritis Plantar fasciitis (heel spur syndrome) Medial epicondylitis (golfer’s elbow) Patellar tendinitis (jumper’s knee) Shoulder tendinitis (rotator cuff tendinitis) Achilles tendinopathy Retrocalcaneal bursitis (ankle bursitis) Morton’s neuroma Nonunion stress fractures
Additionally, shockwave therapy has been used to diminish the appearance of cellulite, scars, and stretch marks.

  • The Shockwave Procedure

Shockwave therapy is efficient and effective. Specialists use a handheld device to deliver audible, low-energy sound waves to the targeted area. The procedure typically takes less than 10 minutes and requires no downtime.

Most patients experience minimal pain or discomfort, with adjustable frequency and energy levels. The procedure presents virtually no risks or side effects.

Typically, three treatments spaced one to two weeks apart are recommended, with one or two additional sessions if necessary. While some patients feel immediate relief after the initial treatment, maximum benefits may take up to four months.

For best results, shockwave therapy should be combined with strengthening, stretching, and other prescribed exercises.
